As artists-in-residence on Space Studio's Art+Tech programme, Shinji Toya and I presented Layers of Abstraction: A Pixel at the Heart of Identity - a didactic moving image work exploring the ways in which facial recognition systems can be subverted at the pixel level. The work aimed to trouble the idea that machine learning models for classification could be used for something as unstable and socially determined as racial categorisation. We presented a mixed technological method used to uncover a single pixel that would force the model to flip between ‘Asian’ and ‘White’ racial categories in a commercial facial recognition system, an attack that exposed audiences to the underlying pixel-based schema of recognition within computer vision systems.
